Breakfast!

While walking around the block this beautiful fall morning, I was greeted several times with a wonderful smell! Breakfast! What is it about the inviting aroma of toast and bacon! It is welcoming, warm and "feels like home". It beckoned me to go home and make a breakfast of my own!!

Research has shown the importance that a good breakfast plays in our over-all health and daily productivity. It provides fuel, jump starts metabolism, satiates and satisfies. A good breakfast can effect the over-all trajectory of the day in many ways.

And that brings me to another form of intake that should be part of our morning routine. Time in God's Word! It refuels, nourishes, satisfies, jump starts our spiritaul productivity and effects the day's over-all trajectory. Time spent with God's Word, is time spent with God. And there is no other time, better spent.

I confess that some days I skip my spiritual breakfast. I am humbled to admit this. I may grab a spiritual snack, but it is not the same. There are those days when I have a spiritual lunch, or dinner. We know that daily time spent in the Word is what keeps us focused, keeps us going. God meets us no matter what the time of day that we opt to intentionally partake of His spiritual food, but there is something powerful about making it a habit to meet Him, in His Word, in the morning! There was once a time in my life when I would get out of bed and fall on my knees for prayer. And then I would grab my Bible and read. Only then, I would begin the rest of my day. And that was good.

I have now incorporated reading, prayer, Bible study and worship into my day, in an ongoing way. "Deuteronomy" style. Some here, some there, focused on the Lord and what He is sharing and showing me as we do daily life together. And of course, there are those mornings, those beautiful mornings, when I ingest a good spiritual breakfast, even a feast if you will; taking in the Word with reverant awe and drinking in its Truths. And those days are the better days! I am sure you can relate!

I am reminded of a hymn entitled Take the Bible in the morning. Notice the lyrics..."Take the Bible in the morning, but a moment if not more, it is better than an hour, when the trying day is ore...."

The point I believe, is how important time in the Word is to prepare us for the onsloughts of life, including the evil one's sly tactics and the various challenges a day can bring. To spend time in the Word, in the morning, is to fortify our soul with insight and power from on high! Time in the Word equips us for duty. It prepares us for the day. It is like...

Breakfast (for our soul).

"I am the bread of life, whoever comes to me shall not hunger and whoever believes in me shall never thirst." John 6:35
